FAME, FORTUNE & THE ARTS

("What's it all about Alfie?")

An email arrived recently from an artist friend with the adjacent photo attached.

Later that same week the Sydney Contemporary “Australasia’s Premier Art Fair” was on again.

Both statements turned out to be an interesting juxtaposition.

The pic statement (< left) got me to thinking about fame and riches and the arts.

A wise friend once said...

“Neville, your job as an artist is just to do it.”

What’s right or wrong?

The important thing is to be happy in the moment. And that seems more elusive presently for many.

I certainly wouldn’t want to be destitute and it would be nice to receive some recognition but being feted in this lifetime? I dunno?

I like my space.

I was watching Tom Holland and Zendaya on Graham Norton’s show the other evening.

A couple of bright young starlets presently.

I found it a little off putting that so much attention, fame and money can be focussed on a few who can act and are attractive. They certainly lapped it up.

It struck me that things are shockingly imbalanced. But that’s the way it is.

….AND THEN I VISITED THE ART FAIR

Half an hour into this circus I stopped and just had to rein it all in. WHAAAAT?

Apart from the applied discipline of some of the Indigenous art the whole thing was empty.

Whatever happened to artists presenting things from a different creative view or perspective?

Or holding up a mirror to the status quo? Or really expressing the beauty around us in unique ways? Or encouraging us to understand ourselves better? Or making a comment or statement that might move us in some way - emotionally, physically, mentally or spiritually? Or doing things because they simply need to be done minus the desperate need to be validated or recompensed (more than handsomely)?

Or what about simply just questioning things?

Here the overall statement looks to be “we’ve just given up!”.

Next year Fair organisers please give us something apart from unabashed commercialism. Something perhaps that questions us and challenges our current world state of impotent dizzily circuitous apoplexy.

Doesn't it all come down to giving ourselves something

rather than taking from ourselves? - Neville  ☺︎

Nature likes things to be the best and seems
to have a leaning towards recycling the rest.
