EXPECTATIONS + EARNESTNESS

CAN BE BRUTAL (OR BORING)

Encouraged by reading a glowing review I was keen to get along to see the new movie...

“The Brutalist”. It ultimately left me disappointed as my own expectations based on that review were not met.

There’s a lot of disappointment floating around at the moment.

I sense a real shift occurring in our world as people are realising that they are not getting what they have allowed themselves to be led to expect.

What I did see in “The Brutalist” were the two lead characters having “earnest” natures.

Both the actors too who play those roles Guy Pearce and Adrien Brody are earnest people in their own right and that’s fine. They are both fine people and fine actors.

But I came out of the film feeling that earnestness can be both brutal and boring. People who have this outlook that they are somehow pure and right in their view of things are just kidding themselves extremely so. They are so right that that is what makes them so wrong.

They take themselves so terribly seriously.

Countries, governments, corporations, religions, clubs, organisations of any kind and plenty of individuals are guilty of the extreme of earnestness. In our world we are pushing it all too far at the present. We are fixated too much on our navels.

Nature too is making its play and it wants us to become more sustainable. And, yes, nature does have the big picture view - worth listening to its warnings. But there are those who are holding onto their earnestness just that bit too, well, earnestly.

In my humble view everyone wants too much*. Even if just for our own well being we should try some acceptance and bend a little. But too many aren’t budging from what they perceive is their entitlement.

There’s a lot of that happening in our world at present. And woe betide if the unbendable are challenged on their earnestness/their so called 'self righteousness'... their rights. Nothing short of World War III erupts.

People who can accept that things are not perfect have kind of got their life in some balance and I think too to be admired in some way.

Ultimately “The Brutalist” with all of that earnestness left me disappointed and empty as much of this world is doing to itself presently.

The incessant drive to find perfectionism can be a real downer.

The world needs to take a chill pill and lighten up.

I’m well aware that to say to people they should celebrate life in these times is a complete confrontation to their oh so earnest view of how serious their small world view should be received. They are the ones who look silly.

They can’t see the sky for all the trees they have put in their own way.

The lesson from “The Brutalist” experience was to see, feel and experience for yourself.

Don’t listen to others “reviews”…except mine. Ha! - Neville ☺︎
