AN EXHIBITION OF ARTWORKS BY NEVILLE WILLIAMS

WHERE WOULD WE BE

WITHOUT THE SUNSHINE IN OUR LIVES?

Sunshine! (reconnection 1)
(A guiding light for Sydney and Australia)
Artist: Neville Williams ©️Arts Law Australia
Size: 120cm (H) x 132cm (W)
Media: Acrylic and paper dots on stretched canvas
PRIVATE COLLECTION

Artist's Note:
You are looking at an exuberant sunburst of light and life.
An artwork designed to encourage us to celebrate life!

IN A TIME OF UNPRECEDENTED CHANGE
WE ALL NEED TO MAKE SURE
THAT THE SUM OF OUR GOOD TIMES SHINES ON US
OUTWEIGHING THE SHADOWS.

 Theseus and the Minotaur (2020)
"Make the maze of life amazing"
(with a wink to Rosalie Gascoigne and a nod to John Coburn)
Artist: Neville Williams ©️Arts Law Australia
Size: 59cm (H) x 74cm (W)
Medium: Mixed media on cardboard jigsaw puzzle
PRIVATE COLLECTION

Artist's Note:
YOO are looking into a mirror.

The Minotaur and Theseus are both in us
and it's quite a maze inside there!
To find his way out of the maze Theseus carried a string
to mark the route and so find his way back to his own Eden.

In this story Theseus comes to understand that facing
the fears we all hold within us makes a more complete self.
It's OK to have a shadow.
The light and the dark are opposite halves of the same whole.

"Know thyself"*
...and you've found the source of your own happiness.
That's a Sun Tree to the left of artwork.

Put simply this artwork is a contemporary retelling
of the old adage "HOME SWEET HOME".

Artist's Note:
This artwork is called “Pippin’s Poppies” inspired by an exuberant theatrical production
of the show “PIPPIN” staged at the Lyric Theatre in Sydney (Dec. 2020).
Glad to have seen the show early in the season because it was squeezed out too soon by Covid.

Jeez, all of the work that those wonderful artists, musicians, production, creatives and management
put into that fabulous show.
The production deserved a longer run.

What talented people!

I do so love excellence in no matter what form it comes.

I’ve glued my front row ticket (thanks John) to the canvas.

It deserves to be there. Loved it.

In Pippin a young Prince goes on a journey,

in a sense to find himself, only to ultimately discover

what he is looking for in the simple life of home.

Pippin’s travails are a burst of colour to say the least.

…………………………………………

FOOTNOTE: This is a very delicate artwork.

The painted tissue paper flowers project forward of the canvas.

This is part of the attractiveness of the artwork but also makes it fragile.

To give the artwork longevity any purchaser should adopt the painting

with the understanding that for best display it needs to be placed

in a BOX FRAME UNDER GLASS OR CLEAR ACRYLIC.

To display the artwork as is will expose it to dust and the elements.

The painting would only last for a very short time.

A bit like real flowers. Enjoy them while yoo can.

Clover's Flowers (St. Mary's Cathedral Sydney) (Dec. 2020)

Artist: Neville Williams ©️Arts Law Australia

Acrylic on canvas (framed)

Size: 92cm H x 125cm W x 3.5cm D
PRIVATE COLLECTION

Artist's Note:
While out on my daily walk during the time of Corona
I happened upon one of the City of Sydney's
flower boxes at St. Mary's Cathedral.

It got me to thinking about all the good work
the Lord Mayor does for Sydney.
This is only possible because of all those capable staff
and supporters around her.

Here you are looking at a bunch of those supporters.
I've tried to give the painting some depth to match
the depth of character required to run a multi-dimensional City.

Goldfish Bowl of Flowers / Yellow Flowers  (1993)
Artist: Neville Williams ©️Arts Law Australia
Size: Approx. 20cm square and 25cm W x 35cm H respectively
Medium: Acrylic on stretched canvas, framed
PRIVATE COLLECTION

Artist's Note:
Two artworks where a minimalist style is employed.
Love the idea of saying something with an economy of expression.
Leaving it up to the viewer to fill in any void using their own imagination seems valid!
Both works are held in separate private collections.

Study for Calvi and the Guides (circa 1995)
Artist: Neville Williams ©️Arts Law Australia
Size: Approx. 70cm W x 50cm H
Medium: Egg carton cardboard collage, gold leaf,
acrylic on canvas board, framed
PRIVATE COLLECTION

Artist's Note:
This is a metaphorical portrait of people as flowers.
Here we have bunches of beautiful roses.
Roses quite often come with both love and thorns.

Some though take the time, care and pay attention to detail
by removing the thorns before presenting their bouquet.
John Calvi is that sort of a person.

"A Visit to Angela"(March 2020)
Artist: Neville Williams ©️Arts Law Australia
Media: Mixed Media
Size: 122cm(H) x 91cm(W) x 4cm(D) (UNFRAMED)
ARTWORK HELD IN TRUST

Artist's Note:
When my friend Angela was sick a while back
I visited her at home with this bunch of flowers.

It seemed like a good subject to paint and the video below
shows the development process. The collage elements were kindly supplied by Angela's work colleagues.

I utilised the time in isolation
during the Coronavirus pandemic to complete the artwork.

Angela is a most wonderful person a warm,
natural and humane individual.
I hope the painting reflects her colourful spirit.

Remembrance Day (Flanders Poppies) (2014)
Artist: Neville Williams ©️Arts Law Australia
Size: 60cm H x 120cm W x 4cm D
Media: Acrylic, collage on (2) co-joined stretched canvas's unframed
PRIVATE COLLECTION

This artwork is inspired by a photograph
by gardening writer Cheryl Maddocks.

Artist's Note:
This artwork of a windswept field of poppies
might almost be called the battle of the poppies.
The left side of the artwork is weighted with red tones
while the right side of the painting leans towards green.

These are complementary opposite colours
and could I suppose represent opposite sides
in any battle or viewpoint.
Interesting how finally a balance is achieved
in the overall work.

This is the poppy traditionally worn on Remembrance Day
to honour the fallen soldiers in the Fields of France
during World War 1.

Angela’s Visit (2015)
Artist: Neville Williams ©️Arts Law Australia
Size: 60cm (W) x 88cm (H) x 3cm (D)
Media: Acrylic, charcoal on stretched canvas, unframed
PRIVATE COLLECTION

Artist's Note:
Following hospital surgery I was showered with a lot of love
from friends, work colleagues and family.
This painting is an expression of thanks for all of your kind attentions.

Angela was one of those wonderful people who visited
arriving with a huge bunch of flowers that I have painted here.

The actual flowers were bright red but appear here as the pure gold that yoo are.
Thank yoo everyone for your heartfelt kindnesses.

Two Vases of Flowers (circa 1993)
Artist: Neville Williams ©️Arts Law Australia
Size: Each approx. 69cm W x 94cm H
Medium: Acrylic on canvas board and masonite respectively, framed
Both artworks are held in separate private collections.

Artist's Note:
Everything old is new again.
There is real delight in breathing new life into old works by painting over them
with something fresh but leaving parts of the old work to shine through.
The history of each work gives them more depth.

Remembering Russell Prowse (2012)
Artist: Neville Williams ©️Arts Law Australia
Size: 100cm wide x 120cm high
Medium: Acrylic, gold leaf, encaustic, corrugated cardboard collage
on plywood (unframed)
PRIVATE COLLECTION

Artist's Note:
I had the great privilege of working for the late Russell Blair Prowse OBE during the 1970's.
This is a metaphorical portrait of him as a vase of blooming apricot roses.
The apricot roses are a reference to the rosebuds he picked out of his garden
and wore in his lapel.

This man was a leader and a teacher.
While he was a conservative, disciplined, balanced
and ordered man he was also highly creative and a humane human being.
So I have tried to present a certain formality in the work
but also the spontaneity and expressiveness of his creativity.

In this artwork I have wanted to say something more about the man himself.

Yesterday, Today and the Saviours of Tomorrow(May 2020)
Inspired by The Children’s Tree, Botanic Gardens Sydney
Artist: Neville Williams©️Arts Law Australia
Size: 160cm (W) x 80cm (H) x 2cm (D)
Medium: Acrylic, charcoal on canvas (framed)
POA

Artist's Note:
This is the third attempt at producing this artwork.
Originally I had wanted to make a portrait. After two weeks it wasn’t working and was whited over.
Following another one and a half weeks work I turned the painting on its side and its wishes came through.

The Childrens Tree
(Photo: Evie Pikler)
Quite clearly the centrepiece wanted to be inspired by the Children’s Tree located near the waters edge in the Botanic Gardens, Sydney where Captain Arthur Phillip sailed past before raising the British Union Flag at Sydney Cove in 1788 to establish European Settlement here in Australia.

The artwork didn’t want to be a portrait it wanted to be a landscape that tells a story. It is an important story. It is a story of what we are doing to our planet earth. Our home. We are ruining it and us along with it.

To the right of the canvas we can see the walkway leading towards Sydney Cove from Farm Cove. A very subliminal opera house and harbour bridge can be observed if you look for them. The Spirits of Bennelong and Barangaroo can also be seen walking towards their rightful place in our larger STORY FOR AUSTRALIA

Or perhaps the emojis shown are mostly just Lotto balls?

Is that the Sun trying to break through in the top right corner?
Let the child in us speak.

Emoji's representing the children or the child within inside us all.

*NOTE THE SYMBOL OF ENTERTAINMENT i.e. Happy/Sad face motif
I tried four times to give the black emoji a happy face but each cut out stencil kept crumpling or breaking.
It didn’t want to be happy so I turned the stencil upside-down. It worked then.

I'm just going with the flow. Neville
