I have been pushing the idea of a World Expo being held in Sydney for over 26 years now.
The proposed theme is CELEBRATE LIFE! (“RECONNECTION to our larger world environment, each other but most importantly to ourselves”). It is a timely theme with so much disconnection invading our lives.
(The public use of the STAN&PETE emoji symbol above is subject to the good and right support of many.)
I am going to intermittently start to outline for you some of the suggested detailing of my proposal for this Expo beginning here with the suggested inclusion of a major artwork by the late John Olsen titled “Salute to Slessor’s Five Bells” currently positioned in the Northern Foyer of the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall.
My Expo proposal centres on the Sydney Olympic site at Homebush Bay and here I am particularly talking about the inclusion of this artwork as a showpiece of the Australian Exhibition to be located in the entirety of the Brickpit at this site. (see blueprint/mud map).
The John Olsen artwork describes most aptly the “larrikinism” that has so dominated Australia for much of our European settlement.
The John Olsen artwork describes most aptly the “larrikinism” that has so dominated Australia for much of our European settlement.
Briefly, the Olsen artwork tells the true story of Joe Lynch a journalist/cartoonist/artist who fell overboard from a ferry while drunk on Sydney Harbour. He was dragged to the bottom of the Harbour and drowned with the aid of the full beer bottles he was carrying in his coat pockets. His body was never recovered. The story was immortalised in a haunting poem by the late Kenneth Slessor and in turn John Olsen took up the challenge of reinterpreting the poem into a visual panorama of Sydney Harbour in a "nocturnal" framing. It has remained in position as both a mirror to the Harbour and the Nation at Australia’s Premier Cultural site since Queen Elizabeth II glanced it on 20 October 1973.
Though in more recent years the Mural has stayed behind black curtains only being revealed on special occasions because the Sun beams through the sweeping walls of glass in this area bleaching the artwork’s acrylic colours. It was quite a controversial artwork in its time and did not have an easy birth. Perhaps it is time for a re-birthing of the Australian character in a more apt contemporary location encouraging renewed vigour towards our future?
John Olsen was famous for his body of artworks featuring spot on depictions of frogs.
Quite fitting that this major work might be included as a show piece of Australia to the World where the frogs are king. The Brickpit at the Sydney Olympic site is the domain of the protected Green and Golden Bell Frog.
We do so like to dream. Reality is though that for anything like this to create wellbeing it needs to come from and be fuelled ongoing from a point of clarity and appreciation for what we do have. Otherwise it just all becomes another ego bloating exercise with poorly outcomes. When are we ever going to learn to listen? Our world is found wanting at the present time.
The journey is the destination. - Neville ☺︎
