A REMINISCENCE ON WATCHING
THE DARK DISAPPEAR
We seem to be expressing our disappointment so much in so many protests across our world.
Clearly there is a global unrest in our humanity.
So many problems that need creative attention with so few satisfying resolutions.
Some of those protests and statements are no doubt quite justified and others are menacing messages from the disenfranchised. What are we doing wrong when people don’t feel they belong anymore?
I don’t have a quick answer to that question.
But anger is never a welcome resident no matter from whom it emanates.
It just creates more anger.
Seeing these protests reminded me of a concert I once attended many years past here in The Domain in Sydney. The Domain is a large open grassy park space abutted to Sydney’s CBD. Huge concerts are held there. I’m guessing it can probably hold around 100,000+ people comfortably.
The concert attended in my youth appeared to not be well organised.
A sparse attendance of people had smallish groups camped in various spots rather than the usual total ground covering of attendees. Also the starting time of the concert came and went and still no performance on stage.
To add to the uncertain ambience the audience was sitting in a kind of half light.
It was a night concert and the usual lights that flooded the public area had not been engaged.
I don’t remember seeing any security in place.
Anyway these were the days when most people knew how to keep a lid on the crazy person inside. We generally knew what civility was and tended to behave ourselves.

[ Melbourne has recently had a concert that reflected the zeitgeist of this time i.e. "I'm not getting my weeties so I'm going to throw a tantrum". The audience which way exceeded the expected attendance was a gathering of toxic air heads. The gig had to be cancelled because of safety concerns.
Melbourne behave yourselves. The ‘Amyl and the Sniffers’ concert audience showed us that some in this country have a funny idea of what Liberty and Freedom means. Melbourne maybe has it easy by comparison to other cities around the planet. And sure Sydney is no example of perfect behaviours either.
Isn't it timely for a protest to encourage the whole Country to grow up?
Have too many forgotten what self discipline is?
We think we're in charge.
Any and all of the tantrums won't move us anywhere.
If we're not getting WHAT WE WANT is it because in a greater picture we are being made to live more realistically/sustainably?
We can't always have what we want is becoming a painful lesson for humanity. ]

But all those years ago when the concert I attended was held the vast majority of people generally didn’t have an axe to grind that we could see. Most kept their beefs, frustrations and prejudices under wraps.
Discontent was fomenting though under the surface.
Our individual and collective expectations of life were lower back then. People now believe they are entitled to express themselves when and in any way that takes their fancy.
Back in The Domain I had noticed a group of young men (maybe 12) when I arrived who were loud and fighting amongst themselves. They were becoming unruly and the longer the starting of the concert took the louder they became.
To a point of threatening the peace of the concert.
And then it happened.
All of a sudden the stage lights came up and so the flooding of the whole area with light.
On stage was one of those Acrobatic Chinese Dragons given life by exposed human legs thrusting and bouncing in colourful gyrations. This dragon was accompanied with the sound of familiar percussive instruments for such shows.
The attention shifted from the melee in the audience to the light and sound emanating from the stage.
What happened then was a real lesson in life.
The Dragon jumped from the stage into the audience and started making its winding way towards the group causing the disruption. Spotlights followed the dragon's course. In seconds the mischief scattered in all directions not to return.
The concert had begun.
The darkness nowhere to be seen.
The light and the dark can’t occupy the same space at the same time.
The dark wants to extinguish the light and the light’s job is to shine and fill the dark.
We can always choose to invite in the light when things start to get dark.
Even the smallest amount of light can help you see the obstacles that might have been hidden in the darkness of ignorance.
Do we need to bring in a Chinese Dragon to remove the dark? Neville
