 OUT CLUBBING ON OXFORD STREET

SODOM IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER

TALK ABOUT SMASHING OUR OWN MIRROR

The other day I was out clubbing on Oxford Street and in the lounge/cafe area of this club a television series from American Cable TV was being streamed.

I've seen some rubbish TV being aired over the years (as well as much quality programming) but this series takes the cake. There was not one redeeming aspect of this show that could be considered justifiable other than perhaps its high technical production values, really.

I'm no prude I have a reasonably open mind to most things but this was just atrociously shallow and self serving pap. Serious money had been spent here to make it look surface glossy but the substance or gist of it was about showing how low us humans can really sink in our outlook, values, mores, shallowness and disregard for one another.

So what is it that has so many of us hanging out to consume the bad stuff about us?

There couldn't be a growing market to feed those who enjoy watching others suffer could there? Romans and Christians stuff. Cos' that's what this show is about i.e. dominating people enjoying putting down others. "Fully sick" in the truest meaning of the words. We're living in a world now where 'stupid' is increasingly the norm. Like senseless chooks running around without heads (or hearts) in the right connected place.

In discussion with a friend I ventured the comment that in some twisted way is it that we feel better about ourselves when seeing others who are clearly "badder" or worse off than us? My friend said for some the story is perhaps a cautionary tale? Some might learn something! Maybe.

Or perhaps what viewers learn is that this behaviour is acceptable when it isn't.

Truly this show was ingratiating self indulgence playing to the worst in us. It was profiting on the attraction of the negative within us. It was almost the stuff of 'Sodom & Gomorrah'.

I didn't catch the title of the show and have no desire to do so. But I did look around the venue and there was this magnetic participation of some members of the audience who clearly knew the characters quite well and were hanging out for the next nasty thing the lead actors could impact on others in the cast most of whom were just as bad or portrayed as hapless victims.

This is pillar of salt stuff.

This show didn't outrage me. It just made me feel sad for our humanity.

It is acknowledged that the soundtrack to all our lives is the battle between the light and the dark. We should expect to see storylines that overarch the full ambit of existence on the planet but with this TV series the dark was diminishing too muchie of our light.

How low can our humanity sink?

We'd want to be very aware of the type of light that can be the response to this sort of stuff.

It's timely for readdressing respect for our own lives.  - Neville Williams
