BRAVO!Reading sanity amongst so much of the dross of today’s news is good for the soul. (“Vanity Wars” Sydney Morning Herald Letters June 4)Jenifer Nicholls (Windsor Victoria) writes in response to a typically clear article by Peter Hartcher where she states that we could “imagine how things might look if defence and war budgets were redirected to peaceful research and development”. Bravo Jenifer.I have been trying to encourage for over thirty years now that we could be hosting a world exposition here in Sydney with the intent to encourage a change in our set in cement programmed thinking. And that’s the real problem today. We actually believe that expenditure focussed on R&D towards peace is wasteful but believe as gospel truth that multi billions spent on defence is somehow justifiable. Huh? It's an obscene waste of money, resources and life.AUKUS is making us here in Australia look like clowns but this whole charade is really about staying buddies with our American friends. I mean who else is going to protect us if China comes bullying. You reckon America will? So many games within games. Anyway doesn't the present American values system have its own bullying style too? In a way the two heavy weights of China and the USA are as much of a muchness just packaged a little differently. That statement will really get up the nose of some. Just let me repeat it once more 'they are as much of a muchness'. They both create suffering in their own backyards let alone on the wider world stage through their own 'disconnection'.
Sure it's good having friends. But don't we at least need to try to walk our own creative path? AUKUS seems to be something of a pretence. I mean we in Australia are a 'middle power' and as such could set some example by spending some money and focus on an event to which the world is invited that encourages reconnection to our larger world environment, each other but most of all to ourselves. We in the Pacific (the United States of Oceania [USO]*) should focus on gearing for creativity not destructivity.Ridiculous Defence spending around the planet only confirms our fear driven motivations in life. The focus needs to be redirected towards more creative peace initiatives.
We are not clowns in Australia. We could choose to be colourful harlequins instead helping to make the fabric of our world society sane again.
Let’s make some real action towards a project that actually creates rather than gears us for destruction. - Neville Williams
FOOTNOTE: It is always our choice.
The suggested commentary here is but only one example of how we might create awareness of a direction needed.
It is also interesting to note that The Daily Telegraph (a more populist newspaper) will print my suggestions for a World Expo but the Sydney Morning Herald (a more intellectually leaning paper) to my memory has never printed any letter where I have referenced the suggestion of a World Expo. If a World Expo is considered frivolous by "the thinkers" of our world then perhaps the thinkers can come up with another way to educate the populace that we might focus attention on ourselves rather than the world (or world leaders) to better improve our lot in life.
No surprise that Pauline Hanson is on the rise.
People have had enough of the way things are and want a better deal.
But who amongst our so called leaders has the courage to inform the masses that a better deal in life means better understanding ourselves. That's homework there's no shortcut.
Brave people indeed who will break the news to those who want things their own ego motivated way.
I got some good advice many years ago.
That is you've got to sugar coat the medicine pill.
Is anyone listening? - N.

You make me happy when skies are grey,
You’ll never know, dear, how much I love you,
Please don’t take my sunshine away…”
