REACHING FOR THE STARS AND ONLY FINDING EMPTINESS

It is sad to read that research conducted with Australians aged 18 to 34 suggests that while everyone wants a better life "they’ve lost confidence that it’s within reach”. 

(“Why young voters lose confidence” Sun Herald Opinion 5 July)

If life is essentially what we make it to be then why is it we have made the enjoyment of life dependent on how much stuff we have, that right job or how much we are liked? 

We’ve become conditioned to thinking that is what is solid? But the evidence on the ground suggests otherwise.

Many times over my late Mother told me the story of the enormous fun she and her best girl friend Dorothy (now 96) had as teenagers. 

Most times they didn’t have two threepences to rub together to even be able to go and see the latest Shirley Temple movie but they knew how to fly. They would dress up in their neatly ironed Sunday best clothes and go window shopping and had a ball together. 

They stayed life long friends. Their friendship was gold to them. 

A million ‘likes' on Facebook is not love and never will be.

We’ve forgotten what living is about. 
Money and status will never fill the hole in our hearts. 
But we’ve brainwashed ourselves to thinking that it will.

We’re facing a new age where we need to re-learn how to live.   

We don’t necessarily want to hear that but that is the truth. 

Really, does learning how to fly again need to be so painful as our minds keep telling us?

First step would appear to be stop listening to our minds. 
Are we reaching for the wrong stars?
