Dear Editor,

WHERE IS THE DOCTOR IN YOUR HOUSE?

Reading about the woes of our health system only makes me want to say that we should all hang our heads in shame for our wrong headed priorities and warped values in life generally. (Sydney Morning Herald Sat. 25 July, 2026)

It certainly was heartbreaking to see my dear elderly Mum being shunted around from one health professional to another in the final years of her life like a sack of potatoes. 

She certainly deserved better when balanced against the contribution she made to our community well being over her lifetime. She took responsibility for herself all her life.
A lesson more need to learn.

My Mother was lucky in having a GP for the major portion of her life who really took an wholistic approach. She swore by him. 

“He was always right” she would say. He was her friend. But when he passed away this family quickly learned that finding the gems amongst all of the self serving dross out there is easier said than done. How horrific it truly was to watch someone you love be treated like an item on a check list.  
We changed health professionals frequently towards the end.

I’m not saying that there weren’t individuals in the health system who didn’t shine. You know who you are. But mostly health if not our entire culture has become a soulless machine rabbit warrened with gold diggers at every level.  
In short the health profession has sullied its own reputation.

This Western Capitalist, economic rationalist, globalised, consumerist culture is reaching the end of its use by date as evidenced alone by the way we treat our sick and elderly. It’s mediocre at best.

I don't question the fact that the health industry is demanding on Doctors, Nurses and Health Professionals at all levels. But people chose this as their profession. And truly I have yet to meet a poor health professional. More is and never will be enough for those who believe that is where the answer lays. When are we going to start understanding that if we are not happy with our choices it is ultimately up to the individual whether they stay or go. 
If you’re not happy then find the courage to shift careers or learn to take more of the shared responsibility.  

This is a big lesson for all of us in these times. Stop blaming someone else. If you can't stand the heat get out of the surgery! That applies to all not only those in the area of health.

Blaming anyone and everyone else for the shortcomings of any system is a bit rich. We all help to create those values and systems that we are complaining about.

No matter what level of the industry you may presently occupy just ask yourself are you really carrying your share of the load or are we all so self survivalists now that we are blind to a more whole reality? 

Yes too even the public have to ask themselves whether they are or have really taken care of themselves as best they could or have just gone along indulging themselves every lazy step of the way only to become a drain on the system.

When we all start to value ourselves better the system will right itself. But getting people to take responsibility for themselves must be the most difficult challenge in life. And for better or worse you are your own health professional along the journey. It is up to us all to fix it.
