A conversation about the contemporary relevance
of the old saying..."Spare the rod and spoil the child."

What a delightful happenstance to find yourself sitting next to someone at lunch who had the same most colourfully memorable Maths teacher back in the 1970’s at the same high school.

We had no recollection of each other from the time but we both most certainly had an imprinted memory of the teacher in question. You’d never forget him.

There’s only two teachers from those days whose names I remember (both christian and surname) leaving an indelible mark on my consciousness. One was the Maths teacher and the other was my Art teacher.

This fellow student and myself deliciously entertained each other for about an hour swapping stories of the Maths teacher. He was a tyrant and loved every minute of his overlording of the students. Holy hell, he was a Master at it all.

I’ve never had a teacher prevent me from sleeping at night but he did. He was ruthless and run his classrooms with a bellowing roar. Whoa betide if you stepped out of line in ANY capacity. He would have your guts for garters.

He scared me and a lot of others into an Advanced Pass in the School Certificate exams. Believe me there is no way I (and others) would have gotten an Advanced Pass in Maths without the impacting discipline he meted out on his students.

As far as this teacher was concerned he had a job to do and he bloodywell did it. No pussy footing around with him. If you couldn’t take the heat in his class then he got you out of his kitchen. Absolutely ruthless he was.

I disliked numbers then and I still hold a prejudice against numbers now but he got the results.

What I do appreciate in hindsight was the discipline.

For goodness sakes I’m an artist and my Art teacher at that time had a completely different modus operandi. He just nurtured and encouraged the creativity out of you and along with it an Advanced Pass. The difference here though was that I loved the art and had a natural incline towards it. Both though, the creativity and the nuts and bolts of numbers, are of benefit in our lives.

So what are we looking at here?

Sometimes we need the discipline in our lives particularly when so very many think that they can play street wise games and bluster their way through life without putting in the necessary work. Bullshit artists I think they’re called.

You get nothing (worthwhile) for nothing in this life.

You know back then we also had a Student Science Teacher whose name has long faded from my memory. And there were those bastards of kids who sniffed out his vulnerability. They broke him. He left teaching after only weeks. Kids can be bloody brutal too. They were actually cruel and merciless to that man. But those kids I’ll bet grew up to be useless morons - supposedly adults(?). Maybe that’s why we have the Maths teacher types in our world?

What were his motivations in being a dictator? Well, you’d have to ask him.

Amazingly though his students most certainly respected him. And I reckon that had something to do with where he was coming from. In some way or form he cared about what he was doing and those who had the nous to learn could see that and feel it too.

But when the histrionics are just totally about a person’s ego self well forget it.

Those types whether Students or Masters only finally create destruction.

And they are so cock sure of themselves that they would say you’ve got to destroy to create. Oh the born to rule set. So right that it makes them so very wrong.

The Maths teacher I think(?) had some substance to him rather than being an empty vessel that constantly needed filling.

We might wonder why the bastards get into power!

When are we going to willingly accept the responsibility to want to learn?

May I venture an opinion that currently we’re producing too many snooty nosed, wuzzy, self entitled, smart arse kids in our world rendering the old adage of “sparing the rod and spoiling the child” outdated for the betterment of our times and their own well being.

Nature it would appear is cleaning up.

Oh the tantrums of those not getting what they want are thick on the ground and not only from our kids.

My Maths teacher and Art teacher were worlds apart. But what we need are the teachers/leaders that can combine and balance the discipline with the nurturing.

And also we need a whole lot of those individuals who want to listen and learn.

A tall order in today’s world of self righteous “disconnection”. Neville
