- ON A CLEAR DAY WOULDN’T WE ALL LIKE TO BE ABLE TO SEE FOREVER?
ROOM WITH A VIEW
Room means space. View means seeing.
To have these things in our lives is no doubt a vision shared by many.
We all have our dreams.
But our world now seems so completely absorbed in its own fantasies presently.
I’m not that different to most. I would be disingenuous if I said I didn’t want more.
But I want more by wanting less of what I don't need.
One of the roles of an artist is to dream.
And I am going to indulge myself here by describing my dream need.
But before I present my dream I want to recognise how disquieting it is becoming for some just to have a roof over their heads.
In a different world that would not be asking for too much.
But in this meat grinder greedy grasping system we’ve constructed it has become like asking for E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G.
Then for some having one or two spaces is not enough. There are people in our world who consider it their occupation to own multiple abodes. And to make as much as they can from these things. That shelter has been so manipulated into investment profit is one example of Capitalism being taken to an extreme. It's obscene.
And we wonder why humanity is so unhappy. There’s one reason.
It's the excess that is the problem.
How many investment properties does a person have to own before they are happy?
When did we start to accept this appalling greed as being the norm? It isn’t.
But anyway to my indulgence.
Where I am living and creating now is most appreciated and cared for but for an artist it is very dark. What I’d like is a big room or open space where I could live and create with a view of light and basic adequate amenities, quietness and of primary importance is a surrounding neighbourhood that respects itself. Oh, and at peppercorn rent. And also it needs to be either in or near the City on a ground level.
Now, is that too much to ask for? Ha! Considering today’s values for many it would be.
I am an artist. I want to create in a space fit for purpose. And my purpose is to create.
But no that is not my real need.
All that I have spoken of previously would though help facilitate my real need.
My real need, my big dream for me is to be blessed to enjoy giving creatively.
Sadly I'm not there at the moment!
The ever increasing bureaucratisation of so called 'modern life' is like living in prison to artists. How can yoo create when at every step this world puts an obstruction in the way?
Or perhaps individually we too put barriers in our own way?
Life can be a very query some experience sometimes.
Since Covid invaded life seems to have become like one difficult hurdle after the next.
Generally speaking though isn't the complicating of our world all about wanting more, protecting vested interests, covetous ownership of something or other, being seen to be successful and winning or being better than the other person?
Sorry but I find holding on with white knuckle ‘Fear Of Missing Out’ by flag waving
these f--ked values totally out of balance with the approaching New World need.
Something has got to give.
Owning everything or being King of the Castle is not what it's about.
I'd like to hear King Charles feelings on that statement.
Of course what makes the difference between a half successful life and a wholly successful life is what people do with all that wealth.
(See the upcoming commentary about Warren Buffett.)
Do we value our artists? If we don’t want a societal culture that becomes like eating cardboard for sustenance then we will support our artists.
It'd be good to be able to find a bunch of contemporaries who share a common vision for a better world. But the journey to Shangri-La starts within inside ourselves. Sadly in our world we’re habitually tied up with our own carapace of self importance.
Me too. I'm not claiming exemption here.
We are all looking for our "Lost Horizon" as a world society and need to find our way home.
Isn’t that where all our hearts want to be? HOME.
Everyone deserves some space and a clear view.
A shelter from the storm. Neville
APPENDIX
While in the process of writing this blog I received an Invitation from the City of Sydney to apply for a City Art Space.
I’ve applied at least twice perhaps three(?) times over the years for similar advertised Council spaces and been unsuccessful.
I’ve got to say that the City Council is a fairly enlightened entity when it comes to its Civic responsibilities with the Arts.
But it’s past my time now.
It's up to others to make it happen. I’m moving on with my life.
I need too to start more consciously looking after my own health and general wellbeing.
Shouldn't that be all our No. 1 priority?
I’m not getting younger and it seems so much now demands just too much of us.
Some may be built for living life in a tempest but I'm built to seek balance and peace in life.
I need to concentrate on planning for my future now. N.
